What to Wear Based on Your Photographers Style

My Photography Style & What to Wear for Your Session

One of the most common questions I get from clients is, “What should we wear for our session?” And it’s such a great question—because the outfits you choose can truly enhance the look and feel of your final photos!

But first, let’s talk about my photography style so you can better understand how everything—from the clothes you wear to the time of day we shoot—comes together to create the beautiful, timeless images you’ll treasure.

My Style: Warm, True-to-Color & Glowing with Golden Light

I edit with a warm, true-to-color style that keeps skin tones natural, backgrounds rich, and the overall feel inviting and joyful. My favorite time to shoot is during the late afternoon or golden hour—those magical last couple of hours before sunset—when the light is soft, golden, and absolutely dreamy. This lighting adds a beautiful natural glow that really makes your photos pop with warmth and life.

What to Wear: Light, Airy & Bright

Now that you know how I shoot, let’s talk wardrobe. Outfits can make a huge difference in how your photos feel. I always recommend leaning toward light, airy tones like soft neutrals, pastels, creams, whites, blush, light blue, sage, or dusty lavender. These tones complement my editing style and reflect golden hour light beautifully.

Want to bring a bit more energy and personality? Bright colors like mustard, coral, or soft turquoise can add a fun pop without being overwhelming. These colors photograph really well and make skin tones glow naturally.

What to Avoid: Bold Patterns & Logos

While bold patterns can be fun in real life, they often compete for attention in photos—especially in group shots. I recommend avoiding busy prints, neon colors, and logos that can be distracting. Instead, opt for soft textures, subtle prints, or solid colors that bring harmony to the image rather than take the spotlight.

Outfit Ideas for the Whole Family

Coordinating doesn’t mean matching exactly—it’s all about creating a cohesive palette. Here are a few ideas:

  • Mom: Flowy maxi dress in a soft floral or solid neutral, layered with a light cardigan or denim jacket.

  • Dad: Khaki or slate gray chinos, a cream or light blue button-down or henley.

  • Kids: Simple dresses for girls in pastel or earthy tones, linen or cotton shirts and shorts for boys.

Think of choosing 2–3 complementary colors and mixing textures like denim, linen, or knit to add depth. Barefoot kids are always cute for beach or grassy sessions, and hats or accessories can be fun—but keep it simple!

When your outfits align with the light and mood of the session, it all comes together in a way that’s natural, joyful, and truly YOU. Whether you’re planning a family session, couples shoot, or portraits, your clothing choices help elevate the entire experience and final gallery.
